Les architectures fictives dans les tableaux, les marqueteries ou les tapisseries de la Renaissance italienne n’ont pas été étudiées de manière systématique jusqu’à présent et leur potentiel pour une meilleure compréhension de l’évolution des typologies et des langages architecturaux n’a pas été exploité. Nous nous pencherons sur les fonctions, les significations et les développements de ces architectures dans l’art de la Renaissance, nous analyserons leur relation avec la pratique et la théorie de l’architecture et nous explorerons leur rôle particulier dans l’appropriation des modèles antiques. Ainsi seront redéfinies, par cette nouvelle clef d’interprétation, des relations inconnues entre peintres et architectes, ainsi que des dialogues entre certains représentants importants de cette période, Mantegna, Leonard de Vinci, Botticelli, Le Perugin, Bramante, Raphaël et Baldassarre Peruzzi.
